My Dad
My father was in the R.A.F. in England. I don't know that much, he never spoke of it much at all. I could never imagine in my wildest dreams him shooting anyone but I know he did. He was a Tail Gunner in a bomber, he earned 6 medals alas I only have one of them. I have a few pictures of him in the desert and I also know he was a P.O.W. He and other men at one point were adrift on a raft or a life boat for a few weeks, how the hell they survived I don't know. He came back from the war with shrapnel in his back and was a hunchback for the rest of his life. The way the world is turning out he would probably just shake his head and say, "why did we bother". But the world was different then and people cared and he cared. Thanks Dad.
I was born in the front parlor of our house at 70 Canavon St, Netherfield, England 24th February 1945
I'm not sure of the exact date but we arrived around February 17th just before my 7th birthday.| S.S. Arcadia the ship we came out on as 10 pound pome's It was also it's last voyage before being scuttled |
We settled in Margate Queensland & so began our new life.
John and I went to "Humpy Bong State School", Humpy Bong means "Dead Huts". The natives moved away when Captain Cook landed at Redcliffe.
I little spartan those days, milk came from a vendor and we took billy cans to him to get our milk. We also had a grocery truck that came around with farm produce. Also the Ice man used to bring the ice and when it was hot we used to follow him in the hope some ice would fall off the truck. Scrap the dirt off and suck our prize.
