A Dignified end for a wonderful Friend

Unfortunately this is part of being a pet owner whether it is a dog, cat, horse, mouse, snake.  They are our individual pets, with there own personalities, likes and dislikes.

It is never an easy decision to make to take a really loved pet to a vet for the last time.  It takes more than courage it takes unlimited love from the owner, it is never easy and another of life's not so nice duties.

This is one of the nicest I have found.

 Some say they will never have another pet and some never do, however most do have new pets and they still remember their past away friends as well.  My choice of a pet is a dog but I like cats to. 

We have 3 dogs and 1 cat.  We have 3 dogs because our very old red cattle dog (Kane) looked like he was on his last legs.  At that time we only had 2 dogs.  So we went to the pound and found a young dog to learn off Kane.  Well the old fellow found a new lease for life and he is still here 12 months later.

He is blind and fat because he can't go far.  Yes we could feed him less but he gets the quality out of his dinner, he just loves his dinner.  We hope that he will just pass away one night, we don't want him to but I'm afraid that is inevitable.

I"m sure his body hurts sometimes, just as mine or yours does, if it becomes to uncomfortable for him I will respect him as the wonderful friend he has always been.

He will never be forgotten, he will never be replaced, we can only add one more name to the wonderful list of pets we have known.

BACK TO THE HOSPITAL

Jack and Kane play fighting, they have a lot of fun doing this.

Well back to the Royal Children's Hospital again today.  I really don't think most people know the power of a dog.  It always amazes me whether we see kids or old folks, there is always a minor miracle. 

Today we went down the back cottage unit, this is for kids that need long term help.  Today there was a young fellow that Jack and I have seen so many times before.  I don't know whats wrong with the child but he is nearly always there.  He never pays much attention to Jack, gives him a pat, sometimes a cuddle and that's it.  But his Grandfather is always there and he usually makes a fuss of Jack.

Today was no exception Jack got the biggest cuddle from this man, not just once but quite a few times.  There is something about this man I really admire, always being there for his Grandson.  He seems such a nice person and he is always cheery but, today the cuddles were really needed.  He is more than welcome.  Jack doesn't know what he is doing, he is just being the dog he is. 

I think because dogs are not judgemental, they don't see a child with burns as we do, they just see another animal to make friends with.  It's a shame in a way that I cannot take picture's, it's not allowed for the security of the kids.  This I can understand.  I am also not allowed to talk about their illnesses.  We are there to take there mind off their problems and hopefully, very hopefully give them something to smile about.

WHAT A GREAT SIGHT

Thousands of volunteers turned out yesterday (Sat) and to day to help flood victims with the cleanup of their homes.  What a wonderful sight on TV as these strangers went into house after house just to help clear away debris and mud.  The council have been running free buses to the flood zones and there are 2 shifts morning and afternoon.  Today we saw pictures in the paper of people lost forever,  when you see the faces it brings it all home from babies to old folks.





Now that makes me smile, good on everyone of them.
Angels don't fly in the sky they walk on land.

Well the big cleanup starts for many, we are so darned lucky we do not have to face that horrible task.

 I am supposed to train people and their dogs tonight but the ground is just sodden.  I think I will leave Jack at home, a wet border collie in a house is not a good thing.

Looks like a few showers coming in, oh joy.  Oh and we do have a threat of a cyclone off the east coast but, at this point it is only a threat.  And we all know about unnecessary media hype.

6:30am.  Woke this morning, beautiful blue sky,  turned TV on total devastation for a lot of Brisbane.  We as a family are so lucky to be out of the flood zone.  My wifes father is safe our son and his girl are safe.

There is another king tide this afternoon so the water that is receding is coming back for another go.  Lets hope not so high this time.  At this point in time we are near the bottom of the tide and we see on TV some people trying to clean up, maybe they don't realise the water is coming again.


9:30am.  Clouds rolling in now we expect showers today.  The weather bureau predicts more heavy rain coming soon.  For a country that has gone through 11 years dought this is incredible. 


The cleanup will take months if not years for some and some, will just walk away.  So sad so bloody sad!

There was a comment on the news yesterday that Wivenhoe is 140% now. That is it's capacity, opening the floodgates is like emptying an olympic pool with a garden hose. So Brisbane could have a big problem, lets hope not, and stay safe and HELP if you can.

STILL RAINING



Wow, still raining that's over a month now with hardly any let up, just a few days here and there.  So sad for  so many, some will never recover what they have lost.  People lost, so many pets just gone forever, stock drowned, crops gone, when will it stop.

Weather reports say no let up for another week.  I am amazed we've had no cyclones, except for one small one that fizzled out.

Just random pics around Brissy

Had a look at the dog club grounds a few days ago,  impossible to mow and the grass is getting up a bit.  Tonight is the first training night for the year, I don't like our chances.  I don't like taking Jack when it's to wet.  Being a long haired dog (like his master) he takes a while to dry out.  (like his master)

We may take a drive up to Wivenhoe Dam this week, we have pics of when it was nearly empty.  Would be interesting to take some more pics in the same places, to compare the difference.  For you out of town people Wyvanhoe is the main dam for the main Brisbane area.  Prior to this incredible downpour we had 11 years of drought.

MY FRYPAN

Well it's still raining, some very heavy showers coming through.  The only good thing for me is, it's not very hot only 26c so the temp is great.  Oh damn England just took the last wicket in the Ashes test,  what a marvelous team they were and a very impressive win.  Now every man that can't even play cricket will giving his expert opinion.  Heads will roll, new plans for the next one.  GOOD ON YOU POME'S well done.

THE FRY PAN

Got my new fry pan for Xmess a carbon steel one made in Australia a dinky di Aussie one.  For my friends in other countries, anything you can fry in is a fry pan mine is actually a skillet.  The difference to those that don't know is: Fry Pan = flat bottom straight sides.   A skillet flat bottom curved side, so most of what we call fry pans are actually skillet's. Now we have informed the world of the subtle difference I will move on.

I have a 12 inch skillet made of spun carbon steel.  About the same weight as a cast iron one but if you drop it, it won't break like cast iron does.  This is the makers story about how some of  their wares first started:

The Bedourie Camp Oven is manufactured from spun steel with a lid that fits over the top, and was originally made for the Bedourie Station. This station found that when the cast iron camp ovens fell off pack horses, or were dropped, they often broke, so they invented the Bedourie which would not break.


It serves the same purpose for cooking including bread, cakes or similar foods. To keep the heat in you had to half bury the Bedourie in hot ashes with some coals added to the lid and it would cook just as well as the cast iron camp ovens, The Bedourie has one more advantage over the cast iron camp oven, in that the lid fits down over the oven so there is no chance of ashes getting into the oven when you half bury it.

The lid also doubles up as a frying pan when you turn it over and use the handle provided in the kit.

(Station = ranch)  They can be seasoned in the normal way and once done become virtually none-stick.


With all the information available about aluminium and Alzheimer's and the the fact that Teflon flakes of in time I decided to go back to the tried and true old fashioned cast iron or in my case spun carbon steel.


Now the other really damned annoying thing I dislike about Teflon is you can't cook at high temperatures, that's the makers recommendation's.   Now I don't like stewed steak how about you.  My fry pan I can turn right up and it is for all purposes none-stick.
